Mrs. Annie Devine, Fannie Lou Hamer and Victoria Gray
Adams, were co-founders of the Mississippi Freedom
Democratic Party whose objective was to be recognized as
delegates at the 1964 Democratic Convention. Their mission
was to unseat congressmen from Mississippi who they claimed
were elected illegally because of discriminatory voting practices.
They became the first black women to be seated on the Floor
of the House of Representatives.
Annie Devine was from Canton, Mississippi and graduated
from Tougaloo College. She is featured in "Standing On My
Sisters Shoulders."
Annie Devine's daughter, Minister Barbara Devine Russell,
attended ROAR'S 5th Annual Fannie Lou Hamer Day &
Ground Breaking Ceremony at the Fannie Lou Hamer
Memorial Garden in the spirit of her mother. Later that
evening, at Cleveland's 4th Annual Amzie Moore/Fannie Lou
Hamer Day, Minister Devine opened up the program with a
powerful prayer remembering our ancestors.
